The Ocean has always needed friends. 40 years ago, a group of Malibu surfers created a grassroots, non-profit to protect what they love. AND SURFRIDER FOUNDATION WAS BORN. But to protect the ocean’s future, we needed new energy. More members. More cleanups. Instead of creating yet another crisis, we tapped into people's generosity of spirit Turning ocean conservation into a friendship movement. We called it: The Ocean Needs More Friends.

But headlines got darker. Anger turned to apathy. Everyone was tired, scrolling past bad news. We had more friends, but we also had more problems. Threats compounded: Drilling. Fracking. Plastics. Pollution. And Indifference.

How do you make people care again when everything’s competing for their outrage? We picked a fight… with indifference. And in 2025, we asked a more provocative question: IF YOU’RE NOT A FRIEND OF THE OCEAN, WHAT ARE YOU SUPPORTING?
